i resently bought an old 3hp evinrude (gale buccaneer) it looks the almost the same as the lightwin, and i could use a lot of information from this site. My motor works almost fine but if i in the motor under the flywheel when its working i see sparks. the amount of sparks is not constant and when there are more sparks to see the motor seems to work worse. is it normal or should i not start the motor and try to fix something first. i was thinking about tuning up the electrical system but i live in the Netherlands and there is no NAPA here. So it will cost a lot of money and time to fix if i want to do that and i really want to put the motor behind our boat before it is too cold to go. so in short: - is it safe to use the motor??????? - and can i easily repair it if the time is there? with best regards jan willem

Yes, my QD medallion had minor scratches and hairline cracks too. At first I was going to use plastic polish, but was afraid I would scratch it even more. Then I recalled an article in one of those model airplane magazines talking about how to make clear plastic canopies even more clear. These guys would dip them in "Future" floor polish. It is acrylic based, basicaly liquid plastic and drys rock hard. So that is what I did, and was pleased with the results. Make sure the medallion is clean and dry, dip into a container with the floor polish, then dry flat in a dust/insect free area (overnight, if possible). It fills in all those cracks and scratches. Repeat if necsessary. If you make a mistake or are not pleased with the results, you can remove the coating with ammonia. It holds up very well, it's been years and the coating has not peeled or chipped. I hoped this helped.
