Had my boat in for repairs because I couldn't get it to idle proerly. I had a problem with the starter and that hasd been repaired with a new solenoid, but even though the motor would turn over it wouldn't idle. I could use the manual lever to get it running at high speed , but when I put the lever to run it would stall out. The local shop was suspicious of the gas/oil mixture, so they got fresh gas and mixed the oil in the proper ratio, but it still would not idle. They gave me a demonstration of the motor running and mentioned that the amount of smoke and oil that was exiting the exhaust was not normal. They flushed the fuel lines, cleaned the carburetor, replaced spark plugs and replaced the "power pack", but couldn't get it to idle. Told me that the smoking was an indication that it might be a blown head gasket or a cracked piston skirt. I decided to take it to another repair shop for a second opinion. The second opinion was that the "switch on the choke was on" and once that was corrected the motor started and idled just fine! I'm not sure where this switch is located, but I would assume that any repair shop should have checked for something as simple as this sounded. I spent in excess a $300 at the first shop and got nothing but "smoke" from the engine and the mechanic! I will not be going back to the first shop, but I wonder how many others have been duped into excessive repairs. The shop that repaired the motor said shops like the first one is what gives the whole boat repair a bad name. Is there anywhere that I could report this "motor malpractice"?

These older motors do not have tell tales. On the 3 HP, there is are small holes on the back of the lower unit where you can see water sputter out. Tom Travis
